Thankful Thursday {vol. 2}

Wow, has is really been 15 days since my last post??  Well then... how quickly time flies!! It's been a very busy couple of week with holiday prep and being {happily} chained to my work station working on a new collection of fine silver charms!
Double heart & dog tag charms

Today I am thanful for gratitude. Yes, gratitude!  I'm thankful that I know what it feels to be grateful and I am thankful for the benefits of living a grateful life.  It's such a simple thing really; yet lately it seems that people are so dissatisfied with what they don't have.  Jonathan Carrol posted earlier this week "Gratitude turns what we have into enough."  Shit happens, life happens, what we think will be changes.  Accept the here and now and be grateful for what you have already... it will help unlock the door of possibility to what you WANT!

I am grateful for you!

AND...tomorrow is the last day to enter my giveaway for a crystal (Swarovski) cocktail ring!

Live big, love hard, look inward and laugh

Today is December 1st.  Though you doubtfully need a reminder from me based on the volume of tweets and facebook posts of people excitedly chatting about the begining of their "favorite time of the year".  Normally, I would fall right in line with this group of happy December lovers; but this year I'm feeling a little uninspired about 12/2011.  In fact, I'm kind of hoping it will come and go as quickly and quitely as possible.

2011 pretty much flipped my world upside down.  In the earliest days of the new year, my world, as I knew it, was suddenly and unexpectedly tossed in the air and landed with a messy splat.  I know it's a little unfair to blame a year for such things, but I think 2011 can handle it.

It's easy to glom onto the hard, sad, painful moments, but truthfully I was also blessed with many incredible and inspiring milestones.  And if I had to pick just three, that inspire me today, I would say "thank you, 2011, for the...
 ...kick-in-the-pants you gave me to launch my jewelry business and website {on my 35th birthday, no less}
...much needed introspection which has been incredible for my soul.
...undying support of my friends and family, without whom I would be sitting here lost if it weren't for your love and safe grounding when I've {sometimes ungracefully} fallen down. You know who you are."
Life is short.  Live big, love hard, look inward and laugh.

Here are a few things which are inspiring me to do just that at this very moment:

And in the end, it's not the years in your life that count. It's the life in your years.
-Abraham Lincoln

Love is when two people know everything about eachother and are still friends.
-Mary Oliver

Consider how hard it is to change yourself and you'll understand what little chance you have in trying to change others.
-Benjamin Franklin

HA HA HA!  Those arms! Kill me.

What do you wake up to in the mornings?

Recently, I've been reallllly struggling to get out of bed in the mornings.  I generally go to bed at a decent hour and I sleep well, but lately, when the alarm on my phone goes off in the morning, it's just NOT doing the trick.    So I'm convinced I need a new wake-up song for my alarm...

Currently I wake up to How You Like Me Now? by The Heavy, which I totally fell in love with after the Kia Motors super bowl commercial.  I just love those puppets--especially that sock monkey!! (And actually I'm a little surprised I've had the song as my alarm for as long as I have... when did that air, like two superbowls ago!?)  Okay, so I really need something new!!

What do you wake up to in the mornings? What gets you jumping out of bed to start the day?

Happy (sleepy) Tuesday!

Cosmic Treasures: unexpected finds from a very special place

I recently found these four amazing pieces of jewelry in my birth mother's hope chest. I have poured over the contents of my mother's hope chest countless times in my lifetime; and I had never before set eyes on these four little cosmic treasures...

Pink sapphire and gold ring
I was so shocked to find the pink sapphire ring. Each time I open the hope chest, I always go through her jewelry. Even though I know what's in there, I still find myself pouring over every little piece. It's mostly costume jewelry but it is very touching to me to {literally} hold the rings, bracelets, necklaces and earrings that she once wore. Her fingers were very slender, and despite the decades of my knuckle cracking habit, her rings fit me! It is missing one of the little diamonds, which I will have replaced; but beyond that the ring is in perfect condition and sooo lovely. And I love the color...strikingly similar to beloved.... kismet.

Gold hammered ring
The gold hammered ring. It's a simple ring with smooth hammering and a surprisingly modern style. I've have been doing a lot more hammered work with my pieces... it's no wonder why I was drawn to this piece.

Gold knot bracelet
The gold knot bracelet is just simply gorgeous. It's in perfect condition. My mother's wrists were very tiny, as are mine, so it fit's well. I paired it here with one of my beloved pieces, a rustic hammered brass bracelet.

Gold heart necklace
My personal favorite, the gold heart necklace. Which bears such a striking resemblance to the beloved logo...!! This was the last of the four pieces I found. Afterwards I could just sit there; marveling, thinking. How is it possible that I never noticed these pieces before? It was as though they had never been there {which I know is impossible} but then...blam...there they were the moment I needed / wanted to find them.

These are cosmic treasures indeed, each of them reminders to follow my passions and to never let go of my dreams!.

Have a happy Saturday, my beloved!!

Sweet Delight

the fabulous Sara and me
Folks, I'm so very behind on many many posts that I want to share with you all!  It's been crazy at the ol' "day job", and also I'm still battling this never-ending cold!  But I'm happy to finally be sharing this post with you all, from a very special day that I shared two Sunday's ago with my beloved friend Sara.

* Title: song title by Mandalélé

We decided to ditch the city and head out to the country for a hike up Old Rag in the Shenandoah Mountains {about 1.5 - 2 hours outside of DC}.  We set out from the city around mid-day, stopped for some provisions {food} and by the time we rolled up to the parking area at the trail head it was nearly 2:30pm.

On our drive to Old Rag - doesn't this look like a painting? I just love the fence and all the colors.

The park rangers informed us that the hike ahead of us was 9+ miles and would take around 4-5 hours, which would be cutting it very close to getting back down the mountain before dark.  Throwing caution to the wind, we said fuck it and headed up the hill.

The mountain was an amazing wash of color and freshness as the leaves were getting ready to turn for the fall.  It was drizzling on and off throughout the day so we weren't sure what to expect along the trail, especially considering the 1+ mile stretch of trail they call the "granite scramble" which, we were repeatedly told, can be pretty grueling when the trail is wet.  Nonetheless we battled onward and upward.

The first signs of fall.

Spring still holding on to the last of it's days.
The trail was tough in spots but mostly it was just endless views of stunning sky and lush landscapes!  We were so all about "girl power" we had a blast pushing each other along, upward, onward, forward!

This image is actually four images taken in sequence and then layered on top of one another!  LOVE!  This totally captures the majesty of the sky that day.
About a mile before we reached the peak we crossed paths with park ranger Bob Look {haha, yep, that's his real name! :} who gave us tips about traversing marker R30 and gave us these little lights because, as two city-girls, we only had our cell phones to light the trail once it got dark {which wasn't too far off at this point}.

The view from nearly the summit of Old Rag back down the trail.  This is the granite scramble, although this picture doesn't do the trail justice AT ALL!  This is about 3 miles worth of winding, narrow, exciting rock trail in this shot.  Amazing colors!

Big sky behind little Sara {on top of the boulder}

Onward, upward, forward we climbed, right over R30 and to the summit where it actually snowed on us!! It was thrilling, and freezing; but luckily we were prepared for the freezing part.

More amazingly, powerful sky
Like two girls, we chatted the whole time, about life, love, loss, the future and we arrived back at the car as the sun was just dipping behind the last of the mountains. We headed home through Sperryville, VA and stopped at the Thorton River Grille and this AWESOME all-girl Sperryville band, Mandalélé, was playing.   and they totally rocked.

From their Facebook page: {which perfectly describes their music and also the kind of day Sara and I had} "Mandalélé is the collaborative creation of three musical maidens and lyrical song poets whose magical weaving of delicate textures convey the listener on journeys that range from deep introspection and reflections on the beauty of nature to joyful expressions of life."
I wish this picture didn't turn out so crummy. I contemplated not including it but these gals so totally rocked, and they were such an unexpected surprise ending to our fabulous day, that I had to give them props.

RAWR, Sara; I love your awesomeness!

No-heat hair curling: the sock method

I'm trying out a new no-heat hair curling method today called the Sock Method. I tried this method the other day, but I didn't like how the ends turned out; they were more "kinked" than they were "curled" {although I'm thinking it was mostly user error :}. So I'm trying it again today...

And if nothing else it's kind of a cute way to pull up the hair for a twist on a "professional" hairstyle. {DC is a pretty conservative working city, so for many {incl yours truly} that generally means the fun, funkier hairsyles are reserved for after hours and weekends.}

I'll report back later with an update on the outcome of the curling powers of the sock method.

* Update: well, the sock method produced cute sassy curls for about two hours... and then the curls completely fell out.   I didn't get a chance to take any pictures since, by the time I was ready, my curls were pretty much all gone. So between the "hair halo" and the sock method, the "hair halo" has taken a strong lead in big-soft-curls department.  I'm have yet to try the sock method as an overnight hair curling method, but I will try tonight and report back tomorrow with an update {or pictures if it produces lasting curls}.

Sweet dreams!

Would you go along with someone like me

Loving mixtures of gold and silver.  And I love the nail trends right now, especially painting the ring fingers different from the rest!  This glittery top coat is so much fun and the options are endless for colors it can be paired with.

Here's what I did:
* Two coats O.P.I. Innsbruck Bronze polish {on all fingers}
* Two coats O.P.I. Only Gold For Me gold glitter top coat on ring fingers
* One coat O.P.I. top coat {over all fingers}

* Note: Be sure to use a base coat if wearing the glitter top coat on it's own - the gold flakes really stick to the nail bed without {lesson learned}.

* Ring: new design - pearl cluster ring from beloved by lindsay

Destination Unknown

I turned 35 this year, at the beginning of September. I was a little anxious about my birthday this year and undecided about how to celebrate.  But all anxiety and indecision was thrown out the window when my friend, James, took me on a surprise road trip for my birthday weekend. James didn't tell me anything about where we were going! We loaded up the car on Friday morning and hit the road...

Four hours later {in record time} Destination #1 became known: NYC!!!

James got us tickets to the Electric Zoo concert on Randall's Island where some of our favorite DJ's were performing live: Carl Cox, Benny Benassi, Victor Calderone, MSTRKRFT, and TIESTO, just to name a few.  I didn't do a great job taking pictures at Electric Zoo :(

TIESTO's set - one of my all time fav DJ's!

More TIESTO

Carl Cox and Victor Calderone turned out amazing sets too.  We danced our asses off, and the next morning we were back on the road for Destination #2 Unknown...

We drove North through Pennsylvania and New York and marveled in how beautiful the hills and trees are as Fall is starting to set in.  Several hours later we crossed the border to Destination #2 known: TORONTO!!

Toronto is a cool, hip city. I'll definitely be going back.  We ate great food, heard great music and danced til we {I} literally couldn't stand any more.

On our last day, we decided to rent bikes from BIXI, Toronto's bike share program.  We rode all over the city starting with Toronto's Distillery District.  And as we ride up, this is what we see!

This is Michael Christian's Kolios art sculpture.  Michael Christian first made this sculpture for Burning Man in 2007.  The Destination Unknown trip that James planned was, in part, a Burning Man alternative for me as I was pretty sad that I was not able to go this year. I have gone the last four consecutive years, with my virgin year being in 2007 when Kolios first graced the playa.  Check out Michael Christian's website--you can see Kolios both in Toronto's Distillery District as on the playa at Burning Man Festival.

Chilling at Balzac's Coffee Roasters in the Distillery DistrictThe Distillery District is a really cute area.  Local vendors come out selling art and crafts.  The area is pedestrian only and full of cute shops, cafes, restaurants and lounges. And terrific people watching.

James, captain of el road trip!

We stopped at Fuzion restaurant for a late afternoon drink and this bee was chilling on our table for the longest time!  He was just walking around the table checking stuff out.  I've never seen a bee behave that way before; I must have taken over 20 pictures of him.

Regretfully our trip had to come to an end, but on the way home we took a detour to visit Niagara Falls.  James and I had never been--it's really pretty impressive!

It's incredible how close to the falls the lookout points are on the Canadian side of the falls.  This photo isn't zoomed in at all and the water is probably only 20 feet away... and it's surprisingly green.

View of the falls from the Canadian side, looking towards the US side.

James and I at Niagara Falls.  {look I'm sporting the hair halo. :)

James, you are an amazing friend, travel companion, dance partner, co-conspirator of fun and craziness and an overall amazing person.  You bring so much joy, laughter, fun and silliness to people's life.  Your generosity and love for your friends knows no bounds; and even though you lied about the marshes of ptown that one time, I'm still grateful that you are my solid!

You are beloved, by me.
